We get the scoop on the #6 Horned Frogs from Frogs O’ War

In preparation for the Hoos’ NCAA Regional in Fort Worth, we got together with our friends over at Frogs O’ War, the SB Nation site for the TCU Horned Frogs to talk a little baseball. Melissa Triebwasser was kind enough to give us the low down on the hosts and #6 National Seed TCU. And when you’re done, head over to Frogs O’ War and check out our responses to her questions. Finally make sure to give Melissa a follow at @TheCoachMelissa and follow along all weekend.

Streaking the Lawn - They say when a team gets improperly seeded in the NCAA Tournament, the team who is higher seeded also gets penalized. What was the reaction to Virginia being tabbed as the two seed in a Regional hosted by a National Seed?

Frogs O’ War - The predictions for TCU were all over the map, but towards the end it looked like Arizona was going to get slotted in at two, much to the chagrin of Frog fans. So, the initial reaction to not seeing the Wildcats was of relief, followed by the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments over not only getting stuck with UVA, but a 40 win Dallas Baptist team that we have had to deal with twice and a sneaky hot Oklahoma State on the other side. If you look at Regionals and pairings, there's an easy argument to be made that whoever makes it out of the Fort Worth Regional/Supers has taken the toughest path to Omaha and should be well prepared to compete for a Natty.

STL - The Horned Frogs have been to Omaha four times in the last seven years, including the last three years in a row. What has been their undoing (besides running into UVA in 2014) and do you think this is the team that can break through and win it all?

FOW - It's not like the Frogs have played poorly the last two years in Omaha, they have just run into buzzsaws once they get there. In 2015, TCU was rolling with a no hitter against Vanderbilt when Kaylee Hartung interviewed Coach Schloss about it DURING THE GAME, only to see Vandy hit a home run one minute later on their way to a 1-0 win. TCU couldn't quite get out of the losers bracket and lost to Vandy one game short of the championship series. After that season, the Frogs lost basically the entirety of their pitching staff to the draft, but found new leaders in Brian Howard and Mitchell Traver, as well as a few stud freshmen in pitcher Jared Janczak and all-world slugger Luken Baker... only to run into a Coastal Carolina team that had a ton of magic around them on their way to an insane National Championship and were led by the kid from Rookie of the Year at pitcher. Primed for a big run this year, TCU was the consensus preseason #1 team and looked the part early, only to have injuries and youth in the bullpen slow them down. For the Frogs to make a run to Omaha this year, the bullpen (which is literally all freshmen and sophomores) is going to need to grow up in a big way and the veteran bats need to get it together - senior Elliott Barzilli was flirting with .400 most of last season but struggled to get above the Mendoza line this year until a strong Big 12 Tournament and sophomore Josh Watson went from leading the team in home runs a year ago to not having a single long ball in 2016. Playing at home throughout the first two rounds, if the Frogs make it through them, was crucial for a team that is so much better at Lupton than on the road (23-4 vs 13-10), and the fact that the top four starters for TCU all had near or at their best performances of the year last week in the conference tourney certainly helps. To get back to Omaha and win it all, the Frogs need quality starts, some help in the order for Evan Skoug, and a lot of Lupton Magic. It can happen - they have the talent - but it's the least likely team since that 2014 group to make it, in my opinion.

STL - It was just announced that Luken Baker has undergone season ending surgery. What's the impact of his loss?

FOW - HUGE. MASSIVE. PAINFUL. You can't overstate what having a bat like Luken Baker in the middle of the order does for the entire lineup. Not only does Baker possess incredible power, but he uses all parts of the field and has an unnatural eye at the plate as well as a great feel for the big moments. Luken Bombs led TCU to Omaha last season and he blasted them all the way to the final series, as he got hot for the postseason. Where it has hurt the most though is how it impacts the rest of the order; even though Baker didn't have quite the same lofty average or home run total of his freshman year, his presence helped Evan Skoug, Cam Warner, and Austen Wade see a lot more pitches over the plate and that made the top of the order so much better. When Skoug was hitting ahead of Baker, it was really hard to pitch around him. When Skoug was behind, he was getting a ton of RBIs. Skoug got red hot right after Baker went down, but cooled way off in the Big 12 Tourney where he was 2/19 with eight strikeouts and newly inserted cleanup hitter Cam Warner was 3/21 with four Ks. Not ideal. No one is going to make up for Baker being done, but if Skoug and Warner can get hot for the duration, and Barzilli and/or Watson just play to their expectation, the TCU offense will be ok.

STL - Speaking of injuries. It looks like TCU avoided a scare with ace Jared Janczak. What is his outlook for the regional?

FOW - JJ came back on a pitch count for the Cal series, and had a normal work day in game two of the Big 12 tournament. Since his return, all he has done is pitch 8.0 innings of three hit ball with one walk, 12 total Ks, and just one walk. By all accounts, he is healthy and off the leash, and should be free to pitch whatever he needs to, likely in the second game. Should that be against UVA, as we expect, I don't foresee any health issues keeping him from being able to pitch like he has all season. Now, the bats of the Hoos could be an issue... but he's definitely the guy I want on the mound Saturday evening.

STL - At first glance, this regional looks like it will be dominated by high powered offenses. How does TCU stack up in comparison, and is the pitching as good as advertised to neutralize the bats?

FOW - TCU's offense scores a bunch of runs (6.8 runs per game), but hasn't been nearly as dominant as expected, even before Baker went down. TCU is striking out nearly eight times a game, which is more than 1.5 times more than a season ago, but still draws a bunch of walks and can put up big innings out of nowhere. This team is never out of a game, and thats a good thing, because the bullpen tends to go into full meltdown mode at least once a series. The key is generally the bottom of the order - if Barzilli, Ryan Merrill, and Nolan Brown get on base, they have a ton of speed and are really aggressive when it comes to stealing bases and things like going first to third on a base hit or taking an extra bag on a relay throw, so they put a ton of pressure on opposing pitchers and defenses with Wade and Skoug looming at the top of the order. Pitching is key, and the Frogs have the best staff in the regional, especially if they continue to pitch like they did last weekend. It's going to be tough to get two wins against Nick Lodolo, Jared Janczak, Brian Howard, and Mitchell Traver, but should one of those guys falter or not get much run support, an opponent has a good shot to get back in a game once Schlossnagle and Saarloos turn things over to the pen.

STL - The Hoos open up with Dallas Baptist. TCU played them twice this season and are obviously familiar with them due to their proximity and availability for mid-week games. Can you give us a quick scouting report on the Patriots?

FOW - Don't be fooled by the conference affiliation of the Pats - this team is really good. DBU has given TCU fits over the years, and despite the Frogs taking two of two this season, they are a force. Austin Listi is a future pro with 20 home runs, a .332 average and a .700 slugging percentage, and he's not the only big bat in the lineup. The Patriots have mashed 84 home runs this year, hit .304 as a team, and average 7.5 runs per game. They can flat out hit. They will strike out quite a bit and are vulnerable to swinging at bad pitches, but they are relentless at the plate and it's really hard to keep them off the scoreboard - shutout just twice this season. The starting pitching has been... not great... so game one could be a fun, high scoring affair.

STL - Virginia fans travel well. If any Hoos are in Fort Worth for the weekend, what do you recommend they check out besides the action on the field?

FOW - Fort Worth is an awesome town... akin to Charlottesville a bit in my opinion (which is one of my top five favorite college towns). There is a ton to do in Funky Town - the zoo is one of the best in the country, the Botanical Gardens is beautiful if the weather is nice, and the Stockyards will give you a true taste of Texas with daily cattle drives (yes, they are real cattle). As far as food, come for the Tex Mex and stay for the BBQ - Joe T Garcia's is a local favorite, Heim BBQ is the best in North Texas - don't @ me, just try the bacon burnt ends - and Woodshed is a close second in Fort Worth when you factor in the incredible atmosphere. Several local breweries have some excellent craft beer (Rahr and Collective Brewing are a stone's throw from Lupton) and don't miss the local distillery, Firestone and Robertson, who are doing excellent whisky and bourbon. Check out Magnolia Ave for great restaurants, bars, and atmosphere, or if you're the younger type, West Seventh has a cool vibe for the 20-something crowd. Downtown sports a very local-flavor restaurant with an excellent rooftop bar, Reata, as well as Sundance Plaza, which is awesome at night. Lastly, our new fancy pants part of town, Waterside, is open, and there's an excellent Italian restaurant Piattello, but the chef who also runs the restaurant with my favorite bar, Clay Pigeon. The baseball tailgating scene isn't anything like football, but we are a friendly type and would love to share a beverage or something off the grill with out friends from back east.

Fort Worth is awesome. Y'all will love it. But the weather might blow this weekend, so I apologize in advance.

STL - What's your prediction for the weekend? How does it play out? Will teams be lighting up scoreboards or do you think the team that pitches the best moves forward?

FOW - Hi, I am Melissa Triebwasser and I am a homer. This TCU team has yet to hit their stride, but historically, they always play well when the stakes are highest. I have a ton of faith in senior pitcher Brian Howard and sophomore sensation Jared Janczak, and believe Evan Skoug will hit well enough to help carry the TCU O. If the bullpen can throw strikes, TCU can win in three. I expect the Frogs to win going away Friday night with Traver expected to be on the mound, to take a close one off of UVA Saturday behind Janczak, and lose a high scoring affair to the Hoos Sunday behind Nick Lodolo, saving Brian Howard for a Monday W to send the Frogs to the Supers. Pitching will win the day, and if that is indeed the case, the home team has the advantage.

So there you have it. Direct from Fort Worth. Thanks again to Melissa. It’s shaping up to be a solid weekend of baseball. Stay with Streaking the Lawn as we bring you Regional coverage all weekend long.

In a season that has been defined by Virginia's lack of depth on the mound, Hoos just don't have enough magic to hold on and beat W&M.

With an uphill climb ahead of them to win the Charlottesville Regional and with a lack of depth on the mound, Coach O'Connor chose to start Daniel Lynch against the Tribe and save Adam Haseley for a possible match up with ECU. Unfortunately Lynch didn't make it out of the second inning giving up three earned runs on four hits in the frame. The runs allowed the Tribe to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.

The Hoos battled back picking up three runs in the fourth thanks to doubles by Pavin Smith and Daniel Pinero and RBI singles by Haseley and Jack Gerstenmaier. Then in the top of the sixth, Virginia got the lead on a Pinero home run to left.

The bullpen couldn't hold though as William and Mary tied the game at four after Charley Gould led off the bottom of the sixth with a double then scored as the next batter, Hunter Smith, singled. The Tribe would get the game winner off Tommy Doyle in the bottom of the seventh when Charles Ameer led off the inning with a home run to left center.

That would be all the Tribe would need as their closer Joseph Gaouette came on to close things out in the eighth and ninth.

While the pitching wasn't at its best, the offense certainly had chances to give the Hoos the victory. On the day Cavaliers bats left 12 men on base including three innings where the Hoos had at least one runner in scoring position with less than two outs only to come up empty.

Pinero and Gerstenmaier led UVA at the plate, each chipping in three hits. Pinero had two RBI, while Gerstenmaier and Haseley each had one.

Virginia finishes the season 38-22, 19-11 good for third in the ACC, but just 2-4 in the postseason.

Hoos struggled to close out ECU...how did the rest of the ACC fare on day two?

Virginia put themselves in a tough situation with ECU's late comeback, forcing them into the elimination game. How did the rest of the ACC do?

Raleigh Regional

Coastal Carolina 3, NC State 0 Suspended, Top 9 (lightning) - The Wolfpack will resume play against the Chanticleers at 1230pm. NC State will have to make moves in the bottom of the ninth if they want to stay in the driver's seat.

Oxford Regional

Boston College 4, Utah 3 - The Eagles shocked the Utes with a 7th inning comeback to propel themselves into the Regional finals. Junior Johnny Adams went 2-for-4 from the plate, knocking his 14th double of the season in the process. BC held the Utes scoreless after the 5th inning. They will play at 6pm against the winner of the Tulane/Utah game.

Tallahassee Regional

Florida State 7, Southern Miss. 2 - Freshman pitcher Tyler Horton excelled in his first postseason start for the Seminoles with six strikeouts and just two earned runs. FSU is now in control in their home regional, and will play either South Alabama or Southern Miss at 6pm.

Louisville Regional

Lousiville 15, Ohio State 3 - Two, two-run home runs for Danny Rosenbaum and 10 strikeouts for Brendan McKay helped lead the Cardinals to their Regional final over the Buckeyes. Ohio State and Wright State play at noon for a chance at facing Louisville at 4pm.

Coral Gables Regional

Miami 4, LBSU 3 - The Hurricanes again needed some late magic in Coral Gables as they took the lead in the top of the 11th on Carl Chester's third hit of the game. A pinch-hit home-run forced extra innings, but the Hurricanes were able to defend their home field. Miami will play the winner of LBSU and FAU at 7pm.

Gainesville Regional

Georgia Tech 12, Bethune Cookman 3 - Georgia Tech stayed alive with a dominating win over Bethune Cookman. The Jackets scored six runs in the top of the ninth to salt away the game and set up their second elimination game - this time against UConn. GT will have a chance to stay alive by beating the Huskies who sent the Jackets to the loser's bracket after the first game.

Clemson Regional

Oklahoma State 12, Clemson 2 - After imposing their will in the first round, Clemson struggled against Oklahoma State. Every OSU hitter had at least one hit and one RBI as the Cowboys ended Clemson's 10-game win streak. The Tigers will take on Western Carolina at noon for a chance at a rematch against Oklahoma State.

College Station Regional

Texas A&M 22, Wake Forest 2 - Not much went right for Wake Forest against the Aggies as they got lit up for 22 runs. Wake will play in an elimination game against Minnesota at 4pm.

Columbia Regional

South Carolina 4, Duke 2 - The 2016 season ended for the Blue Devils with a loss to Columbia Regional host South Carolina on Saturday. Duke finished with a 33-24 overall record for the season.

Dallas Baptist stays alive thanks to a great two-way performance and Texas Tech wins nightcap 4-3 forcing New Mexico to an elimination game.

Day two in Lubbock saw a little less offense, but the games were much more exciting. Here's a look at how things stand about two days.

Dallas Baptist 8 - Fairfield 5

Dallas Baptist managed to stay alive thanks to Darick Hall. No seriously, all the dude did was pitch 7.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits to go along with six strike outs. While that stat line isn't the greatest, he also managed to his his 19th and 20th home runs on the season going 2-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Game, set, match. With the loss, Fairfield ends their season 32-26 but with a MAAC regular season and tournament championship to their credit.

Texas Tech 4 - New Mexico 3

In the nightcap, the Lobos had the Red Raiders on the ropes leading 3-1 through seven innings. However, in the top of the eighth Texas Tech was able to plate two thanks to a two RBI pinch hit single by Ryan Long which tied the game at three. Then in the top of the ninth Stephen Smith hit his tenth home run of the year to make the comeback complete and allow the Red Raiders to take a 4-3 lead. The tally would be enough for the win and allow the Red Raiders to advance to the regional final. New Mexico has to work its way through the losers bracket and will face Dallas Baptist on Sunday.

Dallas Baptist and New Mexico square off at 3 P.M. on Sunday with the winner advancing to face Texas Tech at 7 P.M.

In a game that saw the Cavaliers unable to execute on multiple occasions, the Pirates were able to take advantage of timely hitting in the 9th to send UVa to the loser's bracket in the Charlottesville regional.

Connor Jones got the ball to start, but it was clear he did not have his best stuff. The highly touted righty did not have a 1-2-3 inning his entire 5.1 inning outing, constantly getting into trouble, but escaping the big inning. In the end, Jones did leave the game in the 6th with a 4-3 lead, and it would only get better from there.

Leading 4-3 in the 8th the Hoos were able to get some insurance on the board and seemingly put the game away. Pavin Smith knocked a 1 out home run over the right field fence, his second home run of the day, to give UVa a 5-3 lead. After Daniel Pinero and Adam Haseley got on board, Charlie Cody's sac fly scored Pinero to give the Hoos the 6-3 lead.

The Cavaliers cruised through the 8th only giving up a single.

After going down in order in the top of the inning, the world fell apart. ECU got a leadoff single, followed up by a double, which was followed up by another single to cut the lead to 6-5. After a sac bunt moved the ECU runners up to 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, ECU's Travis Watkins sent Tommy Doyle's 1-1 offering over the left field fence to give the Pirates the 8-6 victory.

The Hoos will now play William and Mary Saturday morning in an elimination game with the winner advancing to play East Carolina later Sunday afternoon. If ECU is going to be eliminated, either the Tribe or the Cavaliers must beat the Pirates Sunday afternoon and then again Monday.

The good news is UVa has not been eliminated yet. The bad news is the Cavaliers have never come out of the loser's bracket in an NCAA Regional to advance to the Super Regionals. Only once has UVa come out of the loser's bracket to play the winner's bracket champion, in 2004 UVa dropped their opener before ultimately being eliminated by Vanderbilt on Sunday.

First pitch between UVa and William and Mary has been moved up to 11. The Cavaliers might not have enough pitching to win three straight games, but crazier things have happened.

Should the Hoos be able to take care of business in Charlottesville, they'll face the winner of the Lubbock Regional hosted by the number five national seed Texas Tech Red Raiders. Here what happened on day one.

The winner of the Charlottesville Regional will face the winner of the regional out in Lubbock, Texas. Host Texas Tech is the only national seed not from the ACC or SEC and the didn't disappoint on the first day of action. Here's a glimpse of the day's games.

Texas Tech 12 - Fairfield 1

The host Red Raiders had no trouble with the Stags, champions of the MAAC, banging out 16 hits on their way to a 12-1 win. Davis Martin was super efficient pitching 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits, while striking out four. The win runs his record to an impressive 9-0 on the year. At the plate every Red Raider batter in the starting lineup registered at least one hit with lead off man Stephen Smith who was 3-3 on the day leading the way. Left fielder, Tyler Neslony had himself a day going 2-4 with four RBI.

New Mexico 12 - Dallas Baptist 6

In the second game of the Lubbock Regional, the hits just kept on coming. The New Mexico Lobos jumped out to a 7-0 lead through six but had to get out of a bases loaded jam leading 7-5 before eventually winning 12-6. New Mexico's Colton Thompson picked up the win, cruising through before getting touched for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Luis Gonzalez led the way for the Lobos bats going 4-4 with five RBI, while Andrew Pratt had two hits and three RBI including a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Jameson Hannah helped make things interesting for the Patriots with a three run home run in the bottom of the sixth, three of his four RBI on the day.

Dallas Baptist takes on Fairfield in the first game at 3 P.M. Saturday with the loser being eliminated. New Mexico gets a chance at the Red Raiders at 7 P.M. to take control of the regional.

With the best record in the country coming into the NCAA Tournament, many thought Bryant could challenge ECU and UVa for the regional.

But it appears that record might have been bolstered by some weak Northeastern opponents as the Bulldogs were eliminated by William and Mary to become the first team eliminated in the Charlottesville Regional.

Nick Brown took the mound for the Tribe and did more than enough to keep William and Mary on top. Brown held Bryant to just two runs on three hits and three walks in seven innings.W&M's Robert White and Joseph Gaouette held Bryant to just a run over the final two innings securing the victory, and Gaouette's 10th save of the season.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the third, both W&M and Bryant decided to put on a home run derby combining for three home runs from the fourth through the seventh innings. Fortunately for W&M, Bryant's two home runs were both solo home runs and the Tribe were able to put another run on the board to fend off the Bulldogs and win 4-3.

With the win, William and Mary stays alive in the Charlottesville Regional and will face the loser of tonight's ECU-UVa game. The win was also the Tribe's 5th straight elimination win after almost being eliminated four times in the Colonial Athletic Tournament last week.

A record 10 ACC baseball teams made the NCAA tournament. How did they do on the first day?

Ten ACC teams took to the diamond on Friday - a record for the conference - in the Regional round in the 2016 NCAA tournament. The Wahoos, reigning champs of course, took down William and Mary 17-4 and will play East Carolina University at 4pm today on ESPNU. How did the rest of the ACC do?

Raleigh Regional

NC State 13, Navy 8 - The Wolfpack outlasted the Midshipmen in a high scoring affair that was interrupted by a two-hour lightning delay. State's senior outfielder Chance Shepard launched a grand slam in the 7th, his second slam of the season. Next up, the Pack will play Coastal Carolina in the winner's bracket at 7pm.

Oxford Regional

Boston College 7, Tulane 2 - Eagle starter Justin Dunn struck out a career high 11 batters over seven innings as Boston College cruised to their first victory. The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning and scored again in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings while only allowing seven total baserunners for the Green Wave. Boston College will now face Utah, who took down host Ole Miss in their first game, at 6pm.

Clemson Regional

Clemson 24, Western Carolina 10 - Yeah, so Clemson had no problem (after the third inning). Down 6-0 early, they stormed back and set a new NCAA record with seven home runs. Their 24 runs tied an NCAA record. While giving up 10 runs is not a great sign...scoring 24 sure is. Up next, the Tigers take on Oklahoma State at 7pm.

Tallahassee Regional

Florida State 18, Alabama 6 - Dylan Busby led the Seminoles with a 3-for-6 day at the plate with a triple, double, and five RBIs. He was one of four FSU players with at least two hits. Florida State plays Southern Miss. at 6pm.

Louisville Regional

Lousiville 6, Western Michigan 1 - The Cardinals had no issue as their superstar pitcher (and amazingly named) Kyle Funkhouser dealt eight innings of stellar play. Funkhouser gave up just one run and four hits while striking out six for the No.2 national seed. Louisville will take on Ohio State at 4pm.

Coral Gables Regional

Miami 4, Stetson 2 - The Hurricanes needed some late magic in Coral Gables to escape pesky Stetson. The Canes' Randy Batista scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch, and an insurance run gave Miami the two-run victory to secure their spot in the winner's bracket. Next up, the Hurricanes face Long Beach State at 7pm.

College Station Regional

Wake Forest 5, Minnesota 3 - The Demon Deacons hit three home runs and starting pitcher Parker Dunshee shone as Wake worked their way into the winner's bracket. Dunshee dealt 11 strike outs, including the 100th strike out of his career, which he recorded in the 7th inning. Wake will play host Texas A&M tonight at 9pm.

Columbia Regional

UNC-W 11, Duke 1 - Soooo, that did not go well for the Blue Devils. The Seahawks cruised, with all nine starters reaching base and going 7-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Duke will have to play for the NCAA life in an elimination game against host South Carolina, who surprisingly lost to Rhode Island in the first round. Game is at noon.

Gainesville Regional

UConn 7, Georgia Tech 6 - The Yellow Jacket rally in the ninth inning fell just short as the Huskies snuck away with a victory. All six of GT's runs came in the final four innings after falling behind 7-0. Georgia Tech plays Bethune-Cookman at noon in an elimination game.
