Turns out, Virginia’s running game could be potent this year.

In some ways, Oregon’s 44-26 win over Virginia late Saturday night on the west coast played out exactly as many predicted. The Ducks’ offense had a field day, amassing 632 total yards on a defense that still has room to grow. Virginia still gave up two turnovers, and the 24th-ranked Oregon looked in control from start to finish.

Still, we learned three things from watching this game. Let’s get right to it.

1. The defense looked better, but the woes will probably continue for some time.

Even if it was because of a typically fast Oregon team that put themselves in position time and time again, the defensive unit looked rough past the second level. Compared to the Richmond game, where the issues stemmed from a kind of “analysis paralysis” with the new 3-4 scheme, on Saturday they looked more prepared but mismatched at virtually every position. Oregon receiver Devon Allen, who finished fifth in the 110m hurdles at last month’s Olympics in Rio, had a monster game with four catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. The secondary was torched all night, but that’s not exactly a shocker when you consider the speed that Oregon has. Leading up to the game, I had said that a successful game for the UVa defense would be holding the Ducks under 50 points, and they did. Even late in the game, the energy was there with hard hits and teammates congratulating each other on good tackles.

2. Whatever happened with the run game against Richmond was something of a fluke.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Albert Reid had 126 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Taquan Mizzell had 48 and a touchdown on 10 rushes and Jordan Ellis had 46 yards on six carries. Ellis especially had a breakout game after not playing against UR due to injury, and that bodes well heading into UConn next week. In all, the Cavaliers picked up 193 yards on the ground, compared to a dismal 38 last week against FCS Spiders. An improved ground game will almost certainly help to open things up through the air, which leads me to my final point.

3. Kurt Benkert looked decent, but he has room to improve.

Benkert’s completion percentage nose-dived from 76 against Richmond to just 51 on Saturday. Oregon’s speedy defensive backs often put themselves into a good position, giving Benkert no easy shots. His quick release was a huge positive, and 9.7 yards-per-completion rate was big reason as to why his short and mid-range throws led to first downs. Benkert clearly has the arm strength for the long balls, but with so many of them either overthrown or errant into the sidelines, Virginia lost out on some big opportunities. With increased accuracy, Benkert can open up the field and give the Hoos more options both in the air and on the ground. The offensive line gave up six sacks in Eugene, although even under pressure, we liked what we saw from Benkert’s short- and mid-range game.

Hoos make progress but can’t hang with more talented Oregon squad

It was an encouraging first fifteen minutes for the Virginia Cavaliers. After a quarter of play, the Hoos had doubled their rushing output from week one. Their defense had forced the vaunted Ducks offense to punt on its first drive. It was only a seven point game.

But then, well...

The Ducks went over, around, and through the Cavaliers defense for the next fifteen minutes. A 13-6 Oregon lead after one quarter became 30-6 after two. Oregon converted a third-and-36, turning what looked like a Cavalier stop into 7 points. The momentum swing seemed to take life out of the Hoos for the rest of the half.

But Virginia hung tough with Oregon in the third, matching the Ducks’ 14 points with 14 of their own en route to a 44-20 score after 45 minutes. UVA scored a touchdown with 7 seconds left in the third quarter, then scored the next points of the game (and the only points of the fourth quarter) on another Kurt Benkert TD pass seven minutes later—a 12-play, 78-yard drive that showed how the UVA offense should and could function.

The Ducks intercepted Benkert on a deep throw after the Hoos’ had stopped a fourth-down try by Oregon, and the final gun saw the home team hold serve, 44-26, a final margin closer than what many experts predicted.

Oregon RB Royce Freeman led the home squad’s rushing attack with 207 yards and 2 touchdowns, including an 85-yard scoring romp straight up the gut in the third quarter. WR Devon Allen—late of the Rio Olympics 110-meter hurdling finals—flashed his wheels as well, getting behind the UVA defense for a 77-yard TD reception, also in the third quarter. QB Dakota Prukop finished with 3 touchdown passes and 331 yards through the air.

Albert Reid was the brightest spot of a Cavalier offense that generally showed substantial improvement from week one, racking up 126 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Kurt Benkert’s accuracy took a bit of a tumble, as the Hoos’ QB finished 20-of-39 for 193 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs.

Virginia will seek its first win of the 2016 season (and of the Mendenhall era) next week at Connecticut, who lost today to Navy, 28-24.

Well, it could be worse?

Going into the intermission, Oregon leads Virginia 30-6 in a game that’s had both highlights and lowlights for the Cavaliers. The score, of course, doesn’t bode well for Virginia fans who were hoping for a close game through and through. But that doesn’t mean all hope has been lost.

As we wait to see what adjustments Bronco Mendenhall and company will make during the second half, here’s what we’re seeing in the first half for those of you who weren’t able to catch it.

1. Virginia’s defense is shaky at best, but this was to be expected this week. Oregon’s offense is fast. They’re smart on the field, they find holes, and they relentlessly tire out your defense. We knew all this already. So, should we be too surprised that Virginia’s getting torched on defense having given up 358 yards in the first half alone? The Hoos are struggling with assignments, giving up an average of 7.6 yards per play, including a big third-and 36 that eventually led to a Duck touchdown. We wanted to see signs of life in the defense, and haven’t found it yet in this first half (at least, not after the initial 3-and-out drive).

2. At the half, Virginia’s offense has already racked up 177 yards, including 92 rushing yards thanks to a breakout game from Albert Reid, who has racked up 92 yards on his own on 12 carries. Quarterback Kurt Benkert has held his own, although he’s overthrown several potentially big plays. He’s 9-18 (not great) with 83 yards.

3. PENALTIES. Remember last week when we and everyone else in the world commented that Virginia had no penalties called on them, and Coach Mendenhall said how that’s not necessarily a good thing? With two quarters in the books, Virginia has had a whopping seven penalties, costing them 82 yards in the aggregate, compared to Oregon’s four penalties for 40 yards.

Virginia had a great first quarter. The second quarter was nothing short of disastrous. What adjustments are you hoping to see in the second half?

A college football Saturday sort of works like a factory floor, if you squint hard enough. The whistle blows at 12:00 eastern time, and the first shift of games commences. Reinforcements of varying quality arrive at 1. The noon games wrap up around 3:30 in time for the second shift to start. The second shift will get you to the evening meal, and may even join you at the table if you’re watching one of those 4 hour SEC slogs. The third shift starts between 7 and 8 and escorts all us east coast dwellers to the doorstep of dreamland.

Tonight, dear Cavaliers, we’re on the fourth shift. The west coast primetime slot. We’re headed well beyond the witching hour tonight, and half of you probably won’t make it out awake, especially if you’ve been parked in front of the television since noon. It’s an hour that feels more suitable for a horror film than a football game, and we just might get to watch some horror after all.

Virginia is heading out west to face the University of Oregon, a return trip from the 49 point thrashing the Ducks delivered to Scott Stadium back in 2013. That Oregon team was #2 in the nation at the time, and ended up with an 11-2 record. This iteration of the Ducks is not quite as highly regarded, but still more than capable of delivering a blowout if Virginia has not improved mightily in the past week. The fourth shift, however, has earned a reputation for being the home of odd games, strange results, and the occasional mind-melting upset. You should probably watch it with us...just in case.

The Game Thread is open.

Only two people got dysentery!

Virginia Football is headed out west to take on the Ducks of Oregon. Streaking the Lawn got exclusive access to document the journey along the Oregon Trail. It wasn’t a pretty sight, but we were lucky enough to survive to tell the tale. We sent a photographer along the way and grabbed some shots, which look shockingly like the 1990 DOS classic.

First, let’s select our team of who we’re following. We’re going with Coach Bronco Mendenhall, who’s heading up the expedition, QB1 Kurt Benkert, his backup Matt Johns, RB Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, and defensive superstar Quin Blanding.

Knowing he has to rebuild the program from the ground up, Mendenhall has trained to be a carpenter for this journey.

In 2006, the Bronco Mendenhall-led BYU Cougars crushed Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl, 38-8.

Oregon had been successful under coach Mike Belotti, including a Fiesta Bowl win and #2 ranking in 2001. But the success hadn’t lasted. After the Las Vegas beatdown, Belotti and his coaching staff realized things needed to change.

OU Defensive Backs coach John Neal had played with Mendenhall’s brother at BYU. And he had coached and later worked with Bronco at Oregon State. So he reached out to the guy who had just led the beatdown for advice.

When Bronco began his head coaching career at BYU, he had an intervention. He asked the players to write down their issues with the program. Then, he burned the papers.

Neal brought that idea to Belotti, who then called Bronco for more information. He then held a similar team-building exercise. Since that day, Oregon has seen unprecedented success and become one of the most respected programs in college football.
