Virginia men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett announced Thursday evening that Mamadi Diakite has signed a scholarship and will be joining the Hoos in the 2015 class. Don't expect any immediate impact though, as Diakite will take a redshirt for the 2015-2016 season.
"We are excited and fortunate to add Mamadi to the Virginia basketball family this season," Bennett said in the release. "Mamadi is an athletic forward with a big upside. We look forward to his development during his career at UVa."
The 6'10", 200-pound forward out of the Blue Ridge School, who originally committed to the Hoos on August 4, is ranked No 32 in the Class of 2016 247Sports Composite (No. 23 according to 247Sports themselves). By taking a redshirt his first year at Virginia, he'll have time to work with head strength and conditioning coach Mike Curtis, who has simply worked wonders with so many of Virginia's players already.
It will also buy Diakite a year under Bennett to learn the system and have an immediate impact in the 2016-2017 season.
